Part of the Sculpture as Carbon Storage -project

2022–
The work will be transformed once the war in Ukraine has ended
Exhibition visitors can pick up and hold the work.
Sculpture is made from wood waste crushed at a waste processing facility, using the smallest fragments of wood. The crushed material consists of remnants of furniture from homes and carries with it hopes and dreams.
Russia had already invaded Ukraine when Rantala was invited to the exhibition. Like many others, she was shaken. Her thoughts turned to the bombed homes in Ukraine and to how peace must one day be rebuilt from these fragments.
A dove lies on its back, a delicate branch of peace in its beak. Once the war ends, the work will be transformed. A branch will be added, allowing the bird to be positioned upright, evoking a living dove.
The work is part of the Sculpture as Carbon Storage project curated by Eero Merimaa. The materials were sourced from the Topinoja landfill, and the carbon stored in the works was calculated.
