Rebuilding the Church I Rebuilding the Church II Porvoo Art Hall Porvoo, Finland 2007 The subject of my work is rebuilding the Porvoo Cathedral. This church dates from the mediaeval times and it is one of the landmarks in both the cultural and political history of Finland. In May 2006 it was burned down. The churchs shingle roof was destroyed completely and the frescoes sustained heavy damages. This work was first exhibited in 2007 in Porvoo Art
Hall, where I presented the visitors with the symbolic
opportunity to rebuild the church. I drew the façade of
the cathedral to the wall of the Art Hall in a scale of
1:8. I made replicas of the original shingles and stacked
them by the side of the drawing. The visitors could
rebuild the roof by hanging these tarred shingles from
the nails on the wall. On the opposite wall I drew the
gable of the cathedral. Here children could participate
by rebuilding the roof of the vestry with smaller
shingles.
